First of all, St. Patrick's Day! This "holiday" is probably a bigger deal to me than to others because it has a lot of history. Since my University days and for many years after, every year my best friends and I would travel to St. Thomas, Ontario to celebrate this fabulous day with The Bottineau family (a university roommate, Karen's family, and the tradition she started). Her father and brother both played in Irish bands, with other family members making appearances too. There were lots of shamrocks, green beer, sometimes drinking out of cowboy boots, the occassional gin shot with Mrs. B, singing, dancing and so many good times. The last few years that I have missed being out here just haven't been the same. I think of these good times every year on the 17th of March and I miss my friends tremendously. Since it is a special day for me, the boys helpe me celebrate. This year we went to a party at the mall, had a green cookie and painted a picture with a potato. My parents also sent some awesome sunglasses!

"Mommy's Good Luck Charm"
(the funny thing is, this was Wil's first St. Patrick's day outfit when he was 6 months old, and Carson is wearing it at 10 months! It is on the small side for CJ, but Wil was such a little chubber!!)
Another thing that we started to work on this week was sleep. We finally decided that it was time to try something different with Carson. After more than 10 months of very broken and irregular sleeping, we need to help him make a change. He needs good quality sleep to grow and develop and we need it to function better (and for me to help me feel like myself again and to be the kind of person and mommy I want to be, but that sleep deprivation is not letting me be). I have done a ton of reading, gone to workshops, talked to mommy friends and thought and planned for quite a while. We came up with a plan to try this weekend, and fingers crossed so far it has helped him out. (Now I have probably jinxed it!) If nothing else, it has given me hope... now I need to teach myself how to sleep through the night again.
Learning to fall asleep on his own, without mommy or daddy helping.
Wil has started two more fun things this week... his imagination is taking off, it is amazing to see! At night he will sit on our ottoman and say, "Welcome to Wil's Smoothie" and you have to go over and order your smoothie, he takes your money, gives you change and makes you a smoothie (but don't ask for any exotic flavours, he only makes strawberry or green for St. Patricks day). then you drink your smoothies together. It is so cute! The other thing he has started is spreading a blanket out and having a picnic.
This is one of our morning breakfast picnics.
(on another morning picnic he ate an entire carton of blackberries and 2/3 of one of blueberries, the result a few hours later was not pretty!!)
The last thing, that was by far the highlight of my week was something I have been waiting for since I had kids (2.5 years). I always hoped that Wil would do something like this, and he never has, so I pinned my hopes on Carson and after 10 months was beginning to give up. Today it happened FINALLY!!!! I was giddy with excitement! After missing his afternoon nap, Carson fell asleep in the middle of eating dinner!
FINALLY one of my kids fell asleep in his high chair!
(I have about 10 pictures, I was so excited and he is so darn cute!)
Look how much fun you are having with your little men! Makes me think I could be ok with only boys too...they still love and need their mom so much. And they still love to play and be silly.
ReplyDeleteFavourites:
1. Wil's picnic! I want to have one the next time we hang out!
2. Carson asleep in his highchair! Priceless. Scott was quite jealous as he is also waiting anxiously for the day that might happen to Simon (tho I have my doubts...but if naps get missed than anything is possible!).
Way to go with the sleep work. It's so hard. But I think it's worth it in the end. It might not (ever) be perfect but at least we are helping them build their skills.
See you soon!

Yay for sleep!! IT took me 11 months to decide to get "serious" about a sleep plan too. Now with Marty participating in the bed time routine and with the help of homo milk, Ryder is learning how great 10-12 uninterrupted hours of sleep can be..me? I'm still re learning to sleep all night too......
